Preston Lindsay, M.S.M., Board Chairman
For nearly 7 years, Preston has served in leadership capacities for various mission and human service oriented nonprofits. He is committed to bringing his skills in strategizing and administering plans for organizational sustainability and advancement and in leadership to the world of nonprofits because he recognizes that having access to quality programs provided by nonprofits organization in largely disenfranchised and underserved communities can truly be life changing for many families.
Mr. Lindsay’s professional experience is supported by his academic background in the advance social sciences & psychology, management and organizational development and is expected to graduate from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology with a PhD in I/O Psychology, Organizational Leadership Studies in 2019.
Jayde Hudgins, B.A., Vice Board Chairwoman
Jayde Hudgins is a Business Professional in the private sector and Board Chairwoman at grassroots nonprofit organization, Around the Way Girl, Inc. Raised in Atlantic City, New Jersey in a single parent home with her two sisters and beloved brother, Jayde was always eager to be a positive role model for her siblings and her community at large. As a graduate from Temple University, Jayde learned the power of education and how that alone could inspire people in her hometown. While at Temple, she studied Communications and African American Studies, which broadened her perspective on life as an African American and a woman. As a result of her experience at Temple and growing up in an underserved community, Jayde had a vision and a mission to make civic engagement a priority, and above all, she learned to never doubt herself.
Jayde relocated to Atlanta where she is a successful Lead/Senior IT Account Executive. She is also a loving and compassionate mother to a young king who is named after her beloved brother Kendal. The moment he was born, she was born again. Kendal inspired Jayde to be the woman she is today. Today, as the Vice President of Around the Way Girl, Inc. Jayde is fully prepared to share love and light in urban communities globally. Jayde is a true Around the Way Girl who had dreams and an imagination for better and brighter days, and she made that possible through self-love, community, education, and family. Her motto is treat people the way you want to be treated and it will always come back full circle.
Soley Berrios, B.A., Board Secretary
Soley M. Berrios moved to Camden, NJ from San Juan, PR at the age of four. As a first-generation student, she graduated from Rowan University where she studied Radio, TV & Film Productions with a concentration in New Media and proceeded to intern with Complex Media in NYC. But her heart for community engagement and local advocacy called her back home to Camden where she worked with UrbanPromise Ministries, a dynamic not-for-profit in Camden City, as a Community Organizer for the Delaware Gardens Neighborhood Initiative. She played an instrumental role in launching a Community Youth Council and Neighborhood Group. Soley currently works at the Camden Coalition of Healthcare Providers, a coalition of health care providers, community partners, and advocates, committed to elevating the health of patients facing the most complex medical and social challenges in the city. She has worked with over 35 faith-based organizations in Camden and activated them around a culture of health while helping them implement policy and environmental changes that will help their congregations sustain healthier lifestyles in a city often referred to as a food desert. Her passion for mentorship motivated her to continue her work with youth as she expanded the Camden Coalition’s Community Advisory Council with the addition of the Camden Healthy Youth Council where she’s been informing teens around trauma-informed frameworks and the impact they can have on the city.
Soley will soon be transitioning to an organization new and dear to her heart and the champions behind implementing these frameworks in the city, HopeWorks as their new College Success Coach.
Rashan Prailow, Executive Board Treasurer
Rashan is a cum laude graduate of the University of Pennsylvania where he served as the Director of Community Service for the Black Wharton Undergraduate Association and was a Ibrahim Family Fellow at the Wharton Public Policy Initiative. Most recently, Rashan served in the Presidential Personnel Office at the White House under former President Barack Obama. Rashan is a renowned speaker and community organizer, and currently serving as a Business Financial Officer in the public sector.
Maya Carr, Founder/Chief Executive Officer
Maya Carr is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the young women's empowerment nonprofit, Around the Way Girl, Inc. She is native to Camden, NJ, a post industrial city generally characterized by its high incidence of crime and is notable as one of the poorest cities in the country. By way of her experience in Camden, Maya is uniquely equipped with the understanding of what young women living in underserved communities need to overcome life long experiences of trauma and deficent education.
Maya dedicates her time to taking a culturally relevant approach to enriching the lives of young women in urban areas through educational projects and identity development workshops, provided in ATWG, Inc. - all in an effort to combat institutional discrimination, something that she experienced transitioning from her project housing complex of Camden to her predominately white institution in Glassboro, NJ. She is also passionate about directing and co-producing media and social projects that focus on sparking fruitful conversations black/brown female image, hip-hop, and education as it relates to urban lifestyles. She studied radio, television, and film production at Rowan University where the Society of Professional Journalist honored her for her In-Depth Radio reporting. She took her collegiate radio experience and lively personality to the professionals at Radio One Philadelphia, under the mentorship of MoShay LaRen, Q Deezy, and Dyana Williams.
Maya is currently working with BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Enterprises and as a higher education professional for an HBCU while serving hands-on with Around the Way Girl, Inc in preparation for their 2018 programs in Camden, Philadelphia, Atlanta and New York. Maya was recently recognized by Wells Fargo for her grassroots work within urban communities and by BET's Bronze Lens Film Festival and the American Black Film Festival for her Lead Directorial work with the new hit series "Cream X Coffee." Maya's ultimate goal is to advocate for the rights of young women growing up in inner city communities
Nadiyah Ragsdale, Program Director - Head Over Heals
Ms. Ragsdale epitomizes hard work, dedication and perseverance. Growing up in Atlantic City was challenging yet motivating for Nadiyah.despite growing in a single parent home with seven siblings, she believes that success can be attainable for anyone including those of humble beginnings. Nadiyah is a first generation college student and has earned a Master’s Degree in School Counseling, completing the program with a 4.0 GPA. In her profession of counseling, she enjoys building strong and meaningful relationships with students, while leading and providing them with the tools they need to be successful. Her love and dedication for working with students from urban neighborhoods continues to grow. During her free time she enjoys listening to hip-hop music, traveling and being in a peaceful settings.
Emily Nunez, Executive Operations Assistant
Emily Nunez is a proud mother and current student at Rowan University, eager to continue her career in nursing in the near future. Emily is passionate about improving the lives of young women in urban neighborhoods all over the world. Being born and raised in the Downtown area of Camden, NJ a drug-infested and poverty stricken neighborhood; she grew a desire to become a community outreach leader. On her spare time she enjoys taking her daughter on outdoor adventures, celebrating life with her family and investing in all things self-care.
Miguel Ayala, Executive Operations Assistant
Miguel Ayala is a Camden native, who currently is enrolled at Rowan University as a Communications major. While at Rowan he worked for the The Creating Higher Aspiration and Motivation Project (C.H.A.M.P.), where he help mentor inner city young ranging from 6th-12th grade with a mission to prepare them for college. He enjoys giving back to the children of his community and doing reasearch.
Nakia Stephens, Community Outreach Director / Atlanta Chapter
Atlanta native, Nakia Stephens is a screenwriter and community servant leader with the blooming non-profit organization, Around The Way Girl, Inc. where she serves as Creative Director. Stephens is a graduate of Savannah State University’s Mass Communications program where her concentration was Radio/Television Broadcasting. After receiving her degree, Nakia went on to study screenwriting and served The Boyle Heights youth in Los Angeles, California as a LAUSD Intervention Specialist with Americorps. As a travel and culture enthusiast and an avid champion for Women and People of Color, Nakia is devoted to telling authentic and purposeful stories through her art and reshaping the black girl narrative through her service. She believes in the elevation of women and minorities and always aims to create and serve with a purpose greater than self
